A Snippet From “Mira”

“Mira, your mother has never gone behind my back like this.”

Mira didn’t have a response to that. She merely concentrated on a painting behind her parents’ heads. She needed the bathroom badly, so she excused herself for a few minutes. Splashing cool water on her face helped.

Back in the room, her father was going on and on about how wonderful Mira’s sister was. Ruchi. Ruchi was the perfect daughter, the perfect wife and the perfect mother. She would never even think of a divorce. Every marriage had its lows. Mira watched her mother listen quietly.

Finally, she heard her say, “Our daughter needs us.”

Her father replied, “And how will we show our face to people?”
